Fighter squadron in the Mediterranean from May 1941. Converted from Hurricanes to Spitfires in May 1942.

P/O Maynard took off on 22nd November at 06.10 in Spitfire EP696 as the leader of two aircraft on an Ante 'E' Boat Patrol off the coast of Sicily. Whilst returning to base, flying at sea level, he crashed into the sea about 6 miles south west of Pachino. No trace of pilot or wreckage found.
