Remarks:
He is also called Walter Steward, or Stewart. David I made him the first lord high steward of Scotland. This is the greatest office under the Scottish crown, and with it came vast estates. About 1163 he founded the Paisley priory for Cluniac monks and was made a lay brother of the Benedictine order. In 1164 he repelled the invasion into Renfrewshire by the Islesmen. The Stuart family descends from him.
