2nd Earl of Gloucester. He was the grandson of Henry I of England and a descendant of the Viking Rollo, 1st Duke of Normandy. In October, 1141, he was surety for his father, then a prisoner at Rochester, in the exchange with King Stephen, whom earl Robert had captured at Lincoln the previous February. During his fatherÕs absence in Normandy in 1144 he was governor of Wareham. In 1147 he overthrew Henry de Tracy at Castle Cary. In 1153 he was one of the witnesses to the agreement between Stephen and Henry. He resided chiefly at Cardiff, and in 1158 he and his wife and son were captured in Cardiff Castle by Ivor the Little and carried away into the woods, where they were held prisoner until he redressed IvorÕs grievances. He founded Keynsham Priory in Somerset in 1169. In 1173 he took the KingÕs part against his sons, and on October 16, 1173, he went to help the KingÕs forces at the battle of Fornham. Thereafter he appears to have fallen under Henry IIÕs suspicion, and in 1175 he surrendered Bristol Castle to the King. In April, 1183, he was among those imprisoned by Henry as of doubtful loyalty.
