Remarks:

King of England, 1042-1066. Sent to Normandy in 1013, he was educated at the court of his uncle, Richard, duke of Normandy. He became King of England after the death of his younger half brother, Harthacanute. He promoted a number of Norman clery in the realm, and there was immigration from Normandy into England during his reign. He quarreled with Godwin, his wifeÕs father, which led to the QueenÕs removal from court, although there was a reconciliation in 1153. He built Westminster Abbeyt in penance for a failed vow to make a pilgrimage to Rome. He was known for his piety and canonized in 1161.
