Remarks:
She was Danish, and has been called the daughter of the forester of Arques, but there is no source that names her father. Although Richard married her he had been betrothed about 945 to Emma, daughter of Hugh Capet, Count of Paris. He married Emma in 960. After Emma's death about 968, he married Gunnor in a Christian marriage in order to legitimize their children. The story is that he saw GunnorÕs mother, the wife of the local forester, when he was out riding, possibly hunting, and became infatuated with her. The wife substituted her sister, Gunnor.
