His first occurrence, in the lifetime of his father, was on the Pipe Roll of 1129-1130, in Berkshire, where he acquired Greenham, in the Ferrers fief, by marriage. He was one of the rebels against King Stephen in 1138, when he held the castle of Dudley against him.
