Remarks:
He was an illegitimate son and received from his father the comte of the Exmesin or Hiemois. He rebelled against his half-brother, duke Richard II, and was imprisoned at Rouen. He escaped, submitted to the duke, and was pardoned. He was given the comte of Eu, of which his nephew, Gilbert, ancestor of the Clare family, had recently been deprived. He founded the Collegiate Church of Eu.
