effective ruler late Edward III - early Richard II, appears in Richard II by Shakespeare, the TV movie Richard II (1978) has John Gielgud as John of Gaunt, patron of Wycliffe (also here), the "Morning Star of the Reformation", who produced the first English translation of the Bible 1382, mar 3rdly, 1396, to his long-time mistress Catherine Roet [born 1350] by whom he had already had issue:

Joan de Beaufort, born c.1379, Beaufort Castle, Anjou, mar 2ndly, 1396, to Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmoreland and had issue [me, Elizabeth]. these children by Catherine Roet were legitimated by statute 1397 `for all purposes save succession to the crown' (i.e. this line is not in the Royal line of succession, but of course we have other Royal Descents), died 3rd Feb 1399, age 58 yrs, bur St.Paul's Cathedral, London. See biography. Within months of his death his son became king.
Catherine died 10th May 1403, Lincoln, age 53 yrs.



John Plantaganet of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster, Knight of the Garter, King of Castile and Leon. He was born in 1340 and died in 1399.
He married (1) Blanche Plantaganet of Lancaster, daughter of Henry, Duke of Lancaster, granddaughter of Henry, Earl of Lancaster, and great-granddaughter of Edmund Plantaganet, Crouchback, Earl of Lancaster. She died in 1369.
Their first son, Henry, surnamed Bolingbroke, Duke of Hereford, became King Henry IV. (1399-1413). Henry married Mary Bohun, daughter of Humphrey de Bohun X. Their son was King Henry V. (1413-1422), and his grandson was King Henry VI. (1422-1461). The second son of John and Blanche was John Beaufort, Marquess of Somerset, Earl of Somerset, the great-grandfather of Henry VII., King of England (1485-1509), who married Elizabeth, daughter of Edward IV. From this line also descended Joan Beaufort, who married King James I, King of Scots.
Ten generations later, Dr. John Irvine, M.D., born in 1742, came to Georgia about 1765. His great-grand daughter, Martha Bulloch, born July 8, 1834, died Feb. 12, 1884, married at Roswell, GA, Dec 22, 1853, Theodore Roosevelt, born at New York, NY, Sept. 22, 1831, died Feb. 9, 1878. Their first son was Theodore Roosevelt, President of the United States. Their second son was Elliot Roosevelt, born Feb. 28, 1860, died in Sept. 1893. Their daughter was Anne Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States. Eleanor and Franklin are reported to be second cousins.
