William Bryant and Francis May started a candle making business in London in 1852 and in 1861 moved to Bow Street where they began making matches. In 1871 William lived at Oakenshaw, Oak Hill, Kingston on Thames, Surrey and was a manufacturer of chemical lights employing about 1500 persons.
