He later dropped the Barker. All we
know is that he never saw his parents
again. He married an Afrikaans woman
who died 4 years before him. He was a
travelling schoolmaster, and unfortu-
nately froze to death one evening on
the Montagu Pass. (most probably his
horse too). The 4 orphan children were
raised by his wife's family in Bredas-
dorp, South Africa.
