Alfred English Doby, the son
of James Cureton Doby and Sarah
English, was born at Camden, Oct. 20 1840.
He was prepared for college at Camden
by Mr. Julius Stewart and entered from
Kershaw, becoming a member
of the Euphradian society. He left before
graduation in 1858, and attended
the University of Virginia for
two years, after which time he went to Europe
and studied medicine at Paris.
At the outbreak of the war he
returned home and volunteered in the
company of Captain, afterwards General
John Doby Kennedy. He was made special aide to
Gen J. B. Kershaw, in
which capacity he served in every battle
in which the brigade took part, until
he was killed in the battle of the Wilderness,
