Prince of Scotland, 4th Earl of Huntingdon, 1st Earl of Northumberland. He succeeded as earl of Huntingdon on his fatherÕs resignation of the earldom in 1136. During the wars between his father and King Stephen, he fought on the Scottish side, and was at the battle of the Standard. On peace being made in 1139, he received the earldom of Northumberland, the cities of Newcastle and Bamborough being excepted. He became a favorite with Stephen, remaining some time with him in England. In 1150 he founded the Abbey of Holmcultram in Cumberland. He is described as Òhandsome in body and virtuous of life, beloved by all, devout towards God and most compassionate to the poor;Ó St. Bernard says he was a brave and wise knight, following his father in the pursuit of justice and the love of man.
