Duke of Normandy. The eldest son of William the Conqueror, he was heir to the duchy of Normandy and the county of Maine on his fatherÕs death. A rebel against his father in 1077, he soon challenged his brother WilliamÕs crown in England. An ineffectual leader, he eventually mortgaged his lands to his brother and left on the first crusade. After his return, he challenged Henry I, his youngest brother, for England. He was defeated at the battle of Tinchebrai in 1106. He lived the rest of his long life in prison in England and Wales. His son, William Clito, was killed in 1128 in conflict over the county of Flanders with Thierry dÕAlsace of Flanders.
