Remarks:
2nd Earl of Surrey, usually styled Earl de Warenne. In 1090 he fought in Normandy against Robert de Belleme, afterwards third earl of Shrewsbury, who was supported by duke Robert. He took the part of duke Robert against Henry I in 1101, and was deprived of his earldom, which, however, was restored in 1103. In 1106 he commanded a divison of the royal army at the battle of Tinchebrai, and again in 1119 at the battle of Bremule. He married, 1118, Isabel or Elizabeth de Vermandois, widow of Robert de Beaumont (de Bellomont), count of Meulan and first earl of Leicester; but before the count's death she eloped with William, whom she later married. She was then the mother of eight children. He was buried at Lewes Priory at his fatherÕs feet in the chaperhouse.
