Remarks:

Lord Mortimer of Wigmore. He was probably a constant partisan of Stephen against Maud. In 1144 he initiated the reconquest of the Welsh Marches after the revolt of the Welsh on the death of Henry I. He successfully reoccupied the cantreds of Maelienydd and Elfael, and repaired the castles of Cwmaron and Colwen. In 1145 he captured and imprisioned the Welsh prince, Rhys ad Howel, and in 1146 he slew Meredith, son of Madog ap Idnerth, late chieftain of Elfael and Maelienydd. In 1148 he blinded his prisoner Rhys ap Howel.
