Death:
ABT 1371 Bordeaux, Gascony, France aged 31
Remarks:
did not appear to have had much time for chivalry and earthly pursuits. However, he was a "damn good soldier" and is described in the registers as "a shrewd and terrifying fighter". He was small, stocky and known by his fellow as has "the battling Saxon ram".
He was seriously wounded in France, was tended to by John's personal physician. He seemed to be recovering, but died suddenly. Nirac de Bayanne, appointed to oversee Hugh's property at Kettlethorpe, was posthumously implicated in Hugh's death. He is reputed to have confessed on his death to poisoning Hugh, and he repeatedly stated that neither John nor Katherine was aware of what he had done.
