Henry de Percy, 9th feudal lord, was summoned to parliament from 6 February, 1299 to 29 July, 1315. This nobleman obtained, 19 November, 1309, from Anthony Beck, bishop of Durham, by purchase, a grant of the Barony of Alnwick, co. Northumberland. His lordship was one of the great barons who subscribed, in 1301, the celebrated letter to Pope Boniface VIII, upon the attempt of his holiness to interpose in the affairs of the kingdom, intimating, "That their king was not to answer in judgment, for any rights of the crown of England, before any tribunal under heaven, &c., and that, by the help of God, they would resolutely, and with all their force, maintain against all men."
