He was a noted breeder of 'Black Face' sheep, was secretary of the Blackface sheep society and wrote the article on Blackface Sheep in volume II of "The Standard Cyclopedia of Modern Agriculture and Rural Economy." 12 vols. London, 1908.
He lived at Glencrosh until his marriage where he lived at Woodlea, Moniaive, Dumfries.
