Remarks:
At first took active interest in the business of Platt Bros and became member of Manchester Royal Exchange at age 19 in 1876.
By the 1890s he had abandoned the business in favour of sport, and was living at Bruntwood near Cheadle in Cheshire where he had a dairy farm of 40 cows consisting of Shorthorns and Guernseys, and was particulary interested in cow nutrition.
He also acquired a villa at Cannes.

Known as 'The Galloping Major'. A book called 'Major James Edward Platt - a biographical sketch' was published by the Tavistock Press which details his sporting achievements.
He also was the author of the book “The Thoroughbred Racehorse : Its Breeding
and Early Management.”
