He was a Private in the 18th Bn. Manchester Regiment. Service Number: 42252
He was killed on the first day of the Battle of Passchendaele, along with 227 other men in his battalion which had successfully crossed through Sanctuary Wood to Stirling Castle where it met with heavy machine gun fire and shelling.
He is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Panel 53 and 55.
He was the Son of Mary Ireland, of "Picardy," New Rd., Poulton-le-Fylde, Blackpool, and the late Mr. S. J. Ireland.
