'On the outbreak of war he joined the Cardiff "Pals" as a private, and after three months was given a commission in the York and Lancaster Regiment. He went to France in 1915, and fought in the battle of Loos, after which he was promoted to the rank of Captain. He was invalided home in December, and went to the front again in May.
