'He went to France on August 10th as a Second Lieutenant R.E, Special Reserve, and was put in charge of a body of 48 Motor Cyclist Despatch Riders, After the battle of the Marne, "he and his Despatch Riders were sent for by General Smith-Dorrien and complimented by him on their efficiency in rendering valuable services there as well as in the Retreat from Mons," He was invalided home with a fractured shoulder on Nov, 19th, and while acting as Training Officer at the A.S.C. Mechanical Transport Depot at Grove Park contracted a chill, which developed into pneumonia and caused his death on Jan, 25th.' (Malvernian, March 1915).
