выигрыше, ели с большим аппетитом;
One day they were playing cards at the
horse-guard Narumov's.
The long winter night passed imperceptibly; they sat down to supper at
five o'clock in the morning. Those, who had won, ate with a large appetite,
the rest, in absent mindedness, sat in front of their places. But the
champagne appeared, the conversation grew lively, and everyone took part
in it. |
- How did you do, Surin? - the host asked. |
- Lost, as usual. - It is necessary to admit, that I am
unlucky: I play mirandole, never get heated, nothing will knock me from my
purpose, but I keep on losing. |
- And you were not tempted once to back the red? Your
strength of mind amazes me. |
- But what about Germann! One of the guests asked
glancing at a young engineer, - From birth he has not taken a card into
his hands, never made a bet, and yet he sits with us until five o'clock
and watches our play! |
- The game attracts me strongly, - Germann observed, - but I
am not in a position to sacrifice the essential in the hope of gaining the
superfluous. |
|
- Germann is a German: he is cautious, that is all!
remarked Tomsky. - But the person who is incomprehensible to me, is my
grandmother, the countess Anna Fedotovna. |
что?
|
- How? Why? - the guests cried. |
|
- I am not able to understand, - continued Tomsky, -
why my grandmother does not play. |
|
- What is so surprising, - Narumov said, - that an
eighty year old woman does not play? |
|
- So you know nothing about her? |
|
- No! Truly, nothing! |
|
- Oh, well listen then: |
|
- It is necessary to know, that my grandmother, about sixty
years ago, travelled to Paris and was in high vogue there. People ran
after her, to see la Venus moscovite. Richelieu pursued her, and my
grandmother assures us, that he nearly shot himself from her cruelty. |
|
At that time ladies played faro. One day at court, she lost
to the Duke d'Orleans a considerable sum of money. When she arrived
home, grandmother removed the beauty spots from her face, took off her
hoops, informed grandfather about her loss and demanded him to pay. |
My late grandfather, as much as I remember, was a kind
of butler to grandmother. He was afraid of her, like a fire;
nevertheless, having heard about such a terrible loss, he was beside
himself, and he took out bills, that showed that in half a year they had
spent half a million, that they were in Paris, not near Moscow, nor the
Saratov estates, and he completely refused to pay. Grandmother gave him a
box on the ears and slept alone as a sign of her displeasure. |
The next day she ordered her husband to be called, hoping,
that the domestic punishment would have acted on him, but she found
him unshakeable. For the first time in her life she went as far as
reasoning and explanation; she thought to make him ashamed, demonstrating
an indulgence, that there are debts and debts and that there is a
difference between a prince and a coach maker. - What's the use!
Grandfather rebelled. No, that's the end of it! Grandmother did not know
what to do. |
She was slightly acquainted with a very remarkable man. You
have heard about the count St Germain, about which is said so many
wonderful things. You know, that he was reputed to be a kind of wandering
Jew, and invented the elixir of life and the philosopher's stone and so
on. He was laughed at as a charlatan, and Casanova says in his memoirs
that he was a spy; be that as it may, St Germain, in spite of his
mysteriousness, had a very respectable exterior, and was a very kind man
in society. Grandmother to this day loves him unconditionally and becomes
angry, if people talk about him with no respect. Grandmother knew, that St
Germain was able to provide such a large sum of money. She decided to turn
to him. She wrote him a note and asked him to come and see her
immediately. |
The old eccentric appeared right away and found her in
terrible distress. She described to him with the blackest colours the
barbarity of her husband and said finally, that all her hope lay on his
friendship and kindness. |
St Germain mused. |
" I am able to oblige you with this sum, - he said, -
but I know that you would not be at peace, until you had paid me, and I do
not want to lead you into new troubles." "But, dear count, - replied
grandmother, - I am telling you, that we have absolutely nothing." -
"Money is not necessary, - replied St Germain: - please listen to
me". Then he revealed to her a secret, which each of us would give
dearly for ... |
The young players doubled their attention. Tomsky lit his
pipe, inhaled and continued. |
That very evening grandmother appeared in Versailles, at the
Queen's gaming table. The Duke D'Orleans kept the bank; grandmother
gently excused herself, that she had not brought the debt, and in
justification concocted a small story and started to play against him. She
chose three cards, and placed them down one after the other: all three
cards won, and grandmother had completely won her money back. |
|
- Chance! - said one of the guests. |
|
- A fairy tale! - remarked Germann. |
|
- Perhaps the cards were marked? - put in a third. |
|
- I do not think so, - replied Tomsky gravely. |
- How - said Narumov, - do you have a grandmother, who
divines three cards in a row, and up until now you have not taken her
magic from her? |
и ни одному не открыла она своей тайны;
|
- Yes, the devil take it! - replied Tomsky, - she had four
sons including my father: all four desperate players, and not one has she
revealed her secret to; though it would not have been bad for them and
even for me too. But my uncle, the count Ivan Ilyich, told me something
which he
assured me about on his honour. The late Chaplitsky, the vey same who
died in poverty having squandered millions, once in his youth lost - if I
remember correctly to Zorich - around three hundred thousand. He was in
despair. Grandmother, who was always stern to the pranks of young people,
took pity on Chaplitsky. She gave him three cards, which he was to play
one after the other, and took from him his word of honour never to play
again in the future. Chaplitsky presented himself to his victor: they sat
down to play. Chaplitsky staked fifty thousand on his first card and won;
doubled the stake, quadrupled it, - he had won back his losses and
remained still in profit... |
|
However it is time to sleep: it is already a
quarter to
six. |
|
In fact, it was already dawn: the young people finished
their glasses and departed. |
